One Day Monday – Sydney Harbor Bridge Climb

Wandering Souldier 10

On her season finale, we all saw Oprah climb her way to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and have a nervous breakdown which was likely added for more of a dramatic effect. I understand that some people have a fear of heights, and I imagine in certain situations I would have that fear too. Luckily, that doesn’t deter me from a once-in-a-lifetime adventure because I have developed an affinity for aerial views, the feeling of standing on top of the world, and the feeling of free flying through mid-air. With everything there is to do in Sydney, I wish I had a better answer for why this is on my bucket list other than I just really want to because it seems like a lot of fun, but it is what it is.

There are bridges all over the world beckoning tourists to come look out over a city’s breathtaking horizon, but there is something about the Sydney Harbour Bridge that is more iconic and exciting, at least in my mind. If presented with the opportunity, who wouldn’t want to take the time to climb to the top of the bridge for a postcard view overlooking Sydney Harbor on a clear day or night?

With the task of climbing hundreds of stairs, it is bound to be 3.5 hours of good exercise that prepares anyone to climb mountains next. Compared to bungee jumping or skydiving, making it to the top of the Sydney Bridge seems like cake when it comes to mustering up the courage. If you wanted to take your climb to the next level, you could pop the question when you reach the top as it is said to be a very romantic place to propose. With the entire city as the backdrop, an audience, and exhaustion setting in from the ascent, it would be hard to say no.

My pick for the top 5 bridges to climb or walk across:

  1. Sydney Harbour Bridge – Sydney, AUS
  2. Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco, CA, USA
  3. Brooklyn Bridge – New York, NY, USA
  4. Tower Bridge – London, UK
  5. Rialto Bridge – Venice, IT

Have you climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge before? What was your experience like? What time of year did you go?

Every Monday, I will reveal one thing on my bucket list that I hope to accomplish one day (get it?), and hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to share one item on yours. Let’s share dreams and encourage each other to cross one off as frequently as possible.
